Why the C4 Generation Still Matters
This isn't just any old Corvette — it's a fourth-generation car (C4, built 1984–1996), the first ground-up redesign of the Corvette since the original 1963 Sting Ray. Chief engineer Dave McLellan and his team threw out the old body-on-frame approach and moved to a perimeter frame that didn't rely on the body panels for structure, switching some fiberglass components to molded plastic to save weight without sacrificing durability. It was a genuine clean-sheet effort, backed by an all-new suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and a fully redesigned chassis.
By 1988, the C4 had matured into a well-sorted sports car. This was the Corvette's 35th anniversary year, and Chevrolet marked the occasion with a Tuned Port Injection V8 that had already replaced the original Cross-Fire Injection engine a few years earlier, delivering a meaningful step up in horsepower and drivability. The digital dash cluster — a big part of what made the C4 feel futuristic when new — was also in its refined, more reliable second-generation form by this point. This generation would go on to spawn the legendary ZR-1 'King of the Hill' supercar with its 375-horsepower LT5 engine, and a production ZR-1 set a 24-hour endurance world record in 1990, averaging nearly 176 mph. Over its 12-year run, the C4 sold more than 358,000 units and cemented the Corvette's reputation as America's homegrown answer to European sports cars — at a fraction of the price.
